Texas and SMU make the inaugural 12-team Playoff

The Texas Longhorns are a 5-seed playing ACC Champion Clemson Tigers, while SMU Mustangs are an 11-seed facing Penn State Nittany Lions.

Two Texas teams have made the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.

The Texas Longhorns dropped from the projected 3-seed to the 5-seed after losing the SEC Championship Game in overtime to Georgia. They will face the ACC Champion Clemson Tigers (10–3) at Darrell K. Royal Texas-Memorial Stadium on Saturday, December 21 at 3:00 p.m. The game will air on TNT.

SMU's loss to Clemson in the aforementioned title game put their College Football Playoff hopes on the ropes. But in the end, the Committee decided they could not set the precedent of punishing teams for playing in the conference championship game. They will travel to Happy Valley to play Penn State (11–2) on Saturday, December 21 for a noon kickoff. The game will also air on TNT.
