AUSTIN -- Texas Longhorns star quarterback Quinn Ewers exited Saturday's game against UTSA with a strained abdomen and will not return, per head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Ewers, a third-year starter, was arguably college football's top quarterback through two weeks. He completed 14-of-16 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns and a pick through just over a quarter of action. Ewers was seen shaking his throwing hand after multiple passes and was actively shielding it from high fives. Then, after a 49-yard pass to tight end Gunnar Helm, he dropped to the turf and was escorted off the field. He finished the half in street clothes on Texas's sidelines.
High-profile backup Arch Manning came on in relief to throw a 19-yard touchdown pass on his first snap, then scampered 67 yards for a touchdown on his second drive. Texas went into the break leading UTSA 28-7.
It's the latest setback in Ewers's lengthy injury history. He missed six games as a junior at Southlake Carroll in 2020, then elected to forgo his senior year to enroll at Ohio State. He hasn't started every game yet in his Texas tenure. Ewers sprained his right SC joint in a 2022 start against Alabama and missed three games, then missed two starts with a Grade 2 AC join sprain in his right shoulder in 2023.
Ewers is the potential top quarterback selection in the 2025 NFL Draft and a projected top-ten pick.
This is a developing story.
