Riley Wormley and Davis Penn: Southlake Carroll's Two-Headed Dragon

Southlake Carroll Dragons running backs Riley Wormley, a USC Trojans commit, and Baylor Bears commit Davis Penn form one of TXHSFB's most dynamic duos.

Southlake Carroll has a rich tradition of producing Division I quarterbacks, but this season, the Dragons have two running backs committed to play Power Four football.

Senior Riley Wormley, a USC commit, and junior Davis Penn, a Baylor commit, comprise Southlake Carroll's two-headed dragon. Wormley is averaging more than nine yards per carry through three games, leading the Dragons with 329 yards and six touchdowns.

"He's really creative in the open field," Penn said. "You think he's going one way, but then he pulls a crazy move you couldn't even think of doing."

Penn, at 5-10 and 195 pounds, is the thunder to Wormley's lightning. He burst onto the scene as a sophomore with 1,594 yards and 30 touchdowns, and this season he's carried the ball 32 times for 208 yards and three scores.

"He runs with a passion and a chip on his shoulder," Wormley said.

While Penn and Wormley split time last year, 2024 is their first full season together. Wormley wasn't ruled eligible until late September last season after transferring from Colleyville Heritage. With a full offseason training together, both backs have made marked improvements.

"We've both made each other so much better than we could've been without," Penn said.

Southlake has leaned on the duo through the first three games while new starter Angelo Renda settles in. But when the defense loads the box, Renda has proved lethal through the air. The junior is completing 76 percent of his passes with a 7-to-1 TD to INT ratio.

The Dragons are also dominant along the line of scrimmage. James Madison commit Trent Wilson and junior Carey Clayton are the veterans in the interior, while 6'6 sophomore Luke Wilson has been impressive at tackle.

Penn plans to play in a different shade of green in two seasons, holding strong to his Baylor commitment. He loves how close Waco is to his family and believes running back coach Khenon Hall, offensive coordinator Jake Spavital and head coach Dave Aranda are leading a resurgent program after last year's 3–9 finish.

"That's not a reflection on what's going to happen in the next five years, I promise you," Penn said.
