The CFB Sunday Shakedown - Week 12, 2023

A&M's 12th Man kickoff team, Texas leaves Ames in the dust and more, here are DCTF's superlatives from a jam-packed Saturday of Texas college football.

Here are DCTF's superlatives from another exciting week of Texas college football

Best Win - Texas Longhorns

I wrote a column this week about Sark's inability to close games in the second half. His Texas team just went into Ames and outscored Iowa State 20-11 in the second half to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive with a 26-16 win over the Cyclones.

After Iowa State left guard Jared Hufford called out Texas for being a team with such a high ego that needed to be checked, Texas defensive linemen Byron Murphy and T'Vondre Sweat held the Cyclones to nine yards rushing on 21 attempts. Oops.

Back-Breaking Loss - Baylor Bears

In the cinematic masterpiece that is "Roadhouse", Patrick Swayze said, 'It'll get worse before it gets better." So the question for Baylor - How much worse can it get?

Baylor and TCU both entered the first-ever 'Bluebonnet Battle' on down years, and TCU's 42-17 drubbing proved they're still a different caliber team than Baylor. The Bears are one of three teams in Texas (the other two being Sam Houston and UTEP) to have less than four wins this season. It's been calamitous crash in Waco from the 2021 Big 12 Championship.

Quote of the Week - SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee

SMU was the runner-up for best win with their statement 38-34 victory over Memphis. The Mustangs are one win away from their second ten-win season since 1985. They're in the thick of an American Athletic Conference championship race.

For reference, I think Lashlee is referring to this video Memphis's X account dropped.

Honorable Mention Quote of the Week - Texas wide receiver Jordan Whittington

Play of the Week - Texas A&M's 12th Man Kickoff Coverage

Poor Abilene Christian kick returner. He couldn't possibly have known what was in store for him.

Interim head coach Elijah Robinson sent out the famed '12th Man' Kickoff Coverage unit full of hungry walk-ons. Those dudes flew down the field and brought the boom.

Honorable Mention Play of the Week - Rice WR Rawson MacNeill

This catch is like when your grandpa pulls a penny out from the back of your ear - You have no idea how it happened. Rice takes care of business against Charlotte and needs a win against 4–7 Florida Atlantic to go bowling.

Kobe Bryant 'Mamba Out' Performance of the Week - UTSA QB Frank Harris

Frank Harris, take a bow. The seventh-year quarterback and UTSA's most impactful player in the program's history closed out his career at the Alamodome by breaking his own total yards record in a 49-21 victory over USF. Harris completed 31-of-46 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns and added 112 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

"You couldn't have written a better script to send Frank Harris off," head coach Jeff Traylor said. "We let him go out in style."

Put him on the Mount Rushmore of San Antonio athletes next to Spurs' legends Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.

'New coach, New me' Team of the Week - Texas A&M

A lot of coaches probably could've steered the Texas A&M ship to a 38-10 beatdown of Abilene Christian. But interim head coach Elijah Robinson made his mark having the Aggies wear all-maroon alternate uniforms in his first game. For reference, Texas A&M wore alternate uniforms one time in the Jimbo Fisher era. Robinson also allowed wide receiver Moose Muhammad III wear perhaps the baggiest sleeves of the year, and he responded by catching four balls for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Insult Stray Shot of the Day - Desmond Howard

How far we've come from Howard picking Texas A&M to make the College Football Playoff ahead of the 2022 season.
