SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Johnson (7-1, 5-1) had no hangover effects from their loss a week ago in the Stone Oak Super Bowl to rival San Antonio Reagan as the Jaguars pummeled the San Antonio Marshall Rams (2-6, 2-4) 42-7 in a District 28-6A contest at Heroes Stadium.
San Antonio Johnson was led by QB Ty Hawkins as the TCU commit accounted for five touchdowns in the first half, four passing and one rushing. He opened the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown pass to King Johnson on the game’s fifth offensive play.
After a quick three and out from Marshall, Hawkins went to work again scoring on a 39-yard touchdown run where he made a sensational move to elude a defender and then out-raced the secondary to the end zone to give the Jaguars a 14-0 lead. Marshall would score on the first play of the second quarter as QB Hector Alvarado scored on a four-yard run to cut the Johnson lead in half to 14-7.
Johnson would then rattle off three straight second quarter touchdowns to balloon the lead to 35-7 and put the game out of reach by the halftime break, Hawkins would throw touchdown passes to Gabriel Simpson, RB Lorenn Johnson and freshman WR Bryson Thompson.
Marshall opened the second half with an eight and a half minute drive, but the Rams came away with no points as they turned it down on the Johnson 26-yard line. Johnson would need just over two minutes to add to the lead as with 1:11 left in the third quarter Hawkins and Johnson would hook up once again with a twelve-yard scoring pass to extend the lead to 42-7. Hawkins would not play in the fourth quarter with Johnson holding a comfortable five-touchdown advantage.
Johnson barring two slip-ups from Reagan appears to be locked into the Division I number two seed out of District 28-6A provided the Jaguars take care of business in their final two district games against San Antonio Lee and San Antonio Madison, while Marshall, who is officially eliminated from the playoff race will close their 2023 season out against San Antonio Churchill and San Antonio Roosevelt.
