After a tough non-district schedule, Klein Collins has reeled off multiple wins this season. Through this stretch, the team has put up many points, while the defense has also been stellar. Much of that can be credited to the play and leadership of defensive back Chris Gant Jr (5'10, 185).
The DCTF three-star, who committed to North Texas in mid-August of this year, is steadily improving throughout the season as the team continues to see success. He credits one key attribute that has kept his defensive unit solid.
"Every time we get a win it feels good. Some games just feel different than others," Gant said. "For us, it's discipline. We start off practices in an Army-style warmup. That style of discipline helps on the field."
After wins over rival Klein Oak, Waller and Tomball Memorial, Collins sits at 5-1. The defense is giving up less than 10 points a game, in which Gant plays a significant role. Against Oak, he hauled in his first interception of the season, but his contributions have only increased each week since.
Collins head coach Adrian Mitchell has seen the improvement weekly, which extends well beyond the gridiron.
"He's (Gant Jr.) a business guy, not a rah-rah guy, that's just who he is, an extremely special player. He comes on the field and plays with poise, tenacity and enthusiasm," Mitchell said of Gant. "The main thing with him is his consistency. As a coach, I know he has the ability to be where he is needed on each play, and that says a lot about him. I see that he takes care of business in every aspect of life."
When Mitchell speaks about Gant's business in every aspect, he is speaking about what his star player does in the hallways and classroom of school, a key area where Gant thrives. He is in the Top 10 percent of his class, and that intelligence also helps in his decision-making on the field.
Surely the Mean Green coaches hope to get that and more once Gant is on campus. But in the recruiting landscape, getting the commitment and securing a player's signature on signing day is a challenging aspect of the process.
Several competing schools are still in hot pursuit of Gant. With that said, North Texas has many advantages that Gant spoke on.
"When I first went up there, the coaches welcomed me with open arms, and they took me in like family," Gant said. "On the football side, they run a 3/3/5 defense, and I would play the nickel there. For me, they (UNT) checked all the boxes."
Gant, like he does in high school, is intrigued by the educational aspect of the school, as the coaches spoke highly on the engineering program. This is the major that Gant would be interested in should he make it to campus in Denton.
In the meantime, since his North Texas commitment, Gant has had a few talks with other programs, including Ole Miss, Houston and Baylor.
"I'm always going to be open because things can change," Gant said. "The more schools that talk to me, I'll be open to them."
Gant holds other offers, including Kentucky, Navy, Louisiana Tech, Central Arkansas and Air Force.
