Johnathan Wilson is leaving Klein Forest after spending the last three years as head coach and has accepted a job as running backs coach at Stephen F. Austin. Wilson departs his alma mater after turning the Golden Eagles program around in three short seasons.
Klein Forest broke a 19-game losing streak in Wilson’s first game on the sideline and finished 5-5 in his second season, which was the program’s first season at or above .500 in nine years. The Golden Eagles recorded another 5-5 record last year, marking the program’s first back-to-back records above .500 since the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.
Wilson is the latest former high school coach to join Colby Carthel’s staff. He replaces Eric Stephens Jr., who left the Lumberjacks after one season to join Texas State’s coaching staff. Stephens had spent eight years as a high school coach before joining SFA.
SFA finished a challenging 2022 season with the program’s first Western Athletic Conference championship. The ‘Jacks have a deep and talented running back room led by returner Jerrell Wimbley along with Prairie View A&M transfer Jaden Stewart and UCF transfer Anthony Williams. Wimbley gained 604 yards and scored five touchdowns for SFA last year.
