Under the Radar TE Could Make an Early Impact in Lincoln
Arlington Martin 2023 TE Ismael Smith Flores (6'5, 210) announced his commitment to the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Monday.
Flores chose the Huskers over offers from Indiana, Iowa, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and more.
Flores' decision to commit to Nebraska was primarily influenced by his former high school coach, Bob Wager, now the tight ends coach for the Huskers. Additionally, the Huskers' coaching staff had a clear plan for using Flores in their offense, which was another significant factor.
Flores made his official visit to Lincoln alongside a high school teammate and his former/future coach's son (Gage Wager).
During the visit, Flores had the opportunity to spend time with head coach Matt Rhule and the other Nebraska assistants, which further solidified his decision to commit. Flores is the first scholarship tight end commitment in Nebraska's 2023 class and joins Georgia transfer Arik Gilbert, who committed to Nebraska last week and is currently on campus for the spring.
Flores is rated as a DCTF three-star prospect.
Scouting Report: Flores is seen as a hybrid tight end and is expected to immediately impact Nebraska's offense, as the new offensive coordinator (Marcus Satterfield) runs a lot of personnel which heavily utilizes tight ends. For a comparison, Arlington Martin fans do not need to look far; former Martin TE Brayden Willis is a good comparison. In 2022, Willis led the Oklahoma Sooners in touchdown receptions and was second in receiving yards.
Athletic WR with a Big Upside
Arlington Martin 2023 WR Jeremiah Charles (6'2, 170) also committed to the Cornhuskers on Monday.
NU offered Charles after head coach Matt Rhule saw him perform on the basketball court.
The rising receiver has only played one football season with a real focus. Charles had previously stepped away from football to focus on basketball but decided to return this year.
Charles had a solid senior season with 452 yards on 23 catches with five touchdowns while also being used as a weapon in the run game.
His twin brother DB Josiah Martin signed with New Mexico State in the Early Signing period.
Scouting Report: Charles shows natural football instincts, despite having a short amount of time to focus on the sport. Charles quickly made his way up the Martin depth chart and led the team in receptions, yards, and TDs. Charles is an ultra-competitive player with the added benefit of growing up with a twin brother, the advantage being they pushed each other to be more successful. He showcases good vertical skills on the hardwood, and that should translate to the ability to play over the top of defensive backs at the next level.
Nebraska now has five Texas high school commitments/signing in the Class of 2023.
