Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball has confirmed that Mark Morefield is no longer Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball head coach, effective immediately, as first reported by multiple outlets.

A spokesperson at UMHB said that Kendra Foreman has been elevated from assistant coach to interim head coach. The university had no further comment at this time. Morefield was unavailable for comment.

According to sources, the removal could be the result of an incident that occurred during a team practice in November. Sources indicate a player suffered a season-ending injury when rolled upon by another player. Following the incident, a frustrated Morefield allegedly used an expletive when explaining to the team why the injury should not have occurred. 

Morefield was named Crusaders' head coach in 2015 and turned the program into a perennial winner. He led UMHB to its first NCAA Division III postseason appearance in program history in 2019. The Cru returned to the postseason in 2020 after winning the American Southwest Conference and advanced to the Sectional round (Sweet 16) before the CoVID-19 pandemic shut down the tournament.

UMHB returned to the playoffs in 2021 following another ASC tournament victory and again made an appearance in the Sectional round. The Cru returned to the Sectionals in Overall, Morefield finishes his tenure in Belton with a 146-46 overall record and led the Cru to one of the top two seeds in the ASC tournament for the first time in program history. UMHB was 6-2 in NCAA postseason action under Morefield.

Foreman takes over the interim head coach role at her alma mater after joining the coaching staff before the 2021-2022 campaign. Before joining the Cru, Foreman served as a graduate assistant at the University of Dallas for two years and was a volunteer assistant coach on the 2018-2019 squad that made the program’s first NCAA postseason appearance.

Update: Morefield released the following statement on Thursday morning. "My coaching intensity to build a consistent championship program did not align with the university. We mutually agreed to go a different direction. I wish them the best as they finish out the season. I look forward to building another program in the near future."
