NCAA approves new overtime rules for 2021 season

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel announced that teams will go to alternating 2-point conversions in triple-overtime, starting in 2021.

College football overtime will start to look a little more like fútbol next season.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel announced on Thursday that new overtime rules will take place in the 2021 football season.

The first overtime will continue to look similar to previous years with alternating drives starting at the 25-yard line. However, teams will be required to attempt a 2-point conversion in the second overtime to speed

The third overtime is where things get different. Instead of continuing regular overtime periods, teams will attempt alternating 2-point conversions until one team emerges with a lead at the end of a period. This means that instead of full drives, the overtime periods will be more like penalty kicks.

The NCAA has changed overtime rules in the last several offseasons after Texas A&M and LSU played the longest and highest-scoring game in college football history – a 74-72, seven-overtime prizefight on Nov. 24, 2018.

"This rules change is being made to limit the plays from scrimmage and bring the game to a quicker conclusion," the NCAA wrote in a statement.

The NCAA also released a handful of other rule changes for the 2021 season. The Football Rules Committee has created a framework for addressing "feigning injuries" to slow down opposing offenses. Additionally, the sideline will be permanently extended from the 25-yard lines to the 20-yard lines to give players and staff more space to work with.

For the 2021 season, NCAA points of emphasis for referees include cracking down on taunting, uniform violations and handing out unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for coaches entering the field of play to argue calls.
