COLLEGE STATION — Casey Russell threw eight touchdown passes, leading Colleyville Heritage to a 58-42 victory over Rockwall in the championship of the FSN Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship on Saturday.
Heritage scored on each of its five possessions in the first half, en route to its 58 points, which was the highest point total in a championship game in the tournament's nine-year history. The previous high was 51 points scored by Baytown Lee last year.
Four of Russell's touchdown passes were to Breece Johnson, who was named the MVP of the tournament.
Heritage was the consolation champion in 2004, won the third-place game in 2005, and is one of only three teams to qualify for each of the nine state tournaments. Heritage won its semifinal game, 56-32, over Cy-Fair.
Rockwall reached the championship game by defeating defending champion Baytown Lee, 47-41 in the semifinals, scoring on the final play of the game after Lee was flagged for pass interference.
In the Consolation final, Katy Taylor defeated Katy, 26-12.
