COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Celina impressed some of the state's most successful 4A and 5A programs by capturing the third-annual Fox Sports Net 7-on-7 State Championship. The Bobcats rallied for a 45-41 victory over Abilene Cooper in the championship game of the 64-team, two-day event, held at Kyle Field. Celina's road to the state championship was no easy task, considering its enrollment of 300 students is dwarfed in comparison to Cooper's enrollment of 2,389 students.
Celina fell behind Abilene Cooper by two touchdowns in the first 11 minutes of the championship game, as the Cougars led 21-6. Despite Celina's receivers dropping several key passes early in the game, quarterback Adam Herrin connected on two touchdowns to bring Celina within two points at halftime. Herrin then added three more touchdowns in the second half to produce a stunning comeback 45-41 victory over the Cougars.
After advancing through pool play held on Friday to a 32-team championship bracket which started play on Saturday, Celina knocked off Southlake Carroll (1998 Fox Sports Net 7-on-7 State Champions) in the opening game, 35-20. Next was Abilene, 26-21, then Baytown Lee, 34-27. In the semifinals, Celina held off Grapevine (1998 Fox Sports Net 7-on-7 state runner-ups), 35-28.
In the Consolation final, Corsicana defeated Cypress Falls 50-42.
