2020 Texas High School Football Playoffs: 6A-5A Bi-District Preview

Dave Campbell's Texas Football high school insider Matt Stepp previews the biggest games around the state for the bi-district playoffs including Lake Travis vs Round Rock, Abilene Cooper vs Mansfield Summit and Texarkana Texas High vs Montgomery Lake Creek!

Killeen Shoemaker (7-2) vs DeSoto (7-1), 7 p.m. Thursday at Killeen’s Buckley Stadium: One of the more fascinating matchups in Region II features powerful DeSoto hitting the road and heading to Central Texas for the second straight week, this time to take on a dangerous Shoemaker squad. DeSoto hit the road last week and put it on Waco High, 62-6, as the banged up Eagles were able to rotate players in and out pretty liberally. The Eagles used both QB’s effectively as they rolled up over 500 yards of offense and their dominant defensive line took charge of the game early. Killeen Shoemaker is probably one of the few teams in the state that has the skill position talent to matchup with DeSoto. The Grey Wolves have a speedy group of receivers that can put pressure on an opposing secondary led by Baylor commit WR Monaray Baldwin. There’s no question Shoemaker has the playmakers to keep up, but the big edge for DeSoto is in the trenches, especially their defensive line against the Shoemaker offensive line. That turns into the difference in this game after Shoemaker keeps it interesting with some early big plays. Stepp’s Pick: DeSoto by 16

Round Rock (7-2) vs Lake Travis (6-0), 7 p.m. Friday at Round Rock’s Dragon Stadium: Lake Travis, because of Covid-19 protocols, hasn’t played a game since November 13 when they defeated Del Valle 42-13. The Cavaliers have looked very good in the six games they’ve played this year but there are a lot of unknowns about this team because the schedule was overall pretty weak, and they didn’t get to play their annual showdown game with Westlake. So what do we make of this team? We’ll get some answers this week as the Cavs take on an underrated Round Rock squad that won the 25-6A title. The Dragons have won six straight and are playing their best football of the year. Last week the offense exploded in a 70-42 win over Round Rock Westwood as RB Israel Morgan set multiple school records rushing for 458 yards and six touchdowns. There’s no question Lake Travis on defense will be locked in to slow Morgan down and make Round Rock beat them through the air. If that happens, the Cavs offense, despite having to shake off some rust, will be too much for the Dragons in this fascinating bi-district clash. Stepp’s Pick: Lake Travis by 17

Flower Mound Marcus (9-0) vs Prosper (5-3), 12 p.m. Saturday at Flower Mound’s Wilson Stadium: Unbeaten Flower Mound Marcus went into the playoffs as the regional favorite, but there’s a big cloud hanging over the Marauders after LSU commit QB Garrett Nussmeier’s injury in their regular season finale over Plano East. RB Gabe Espinoza ran for 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Marcus was able to spread the ball around even when backup QB Jaxxon Warren entered the game. Marcus scheduled this game on Saturday, so it gives Warren an extra day of practice to get acclimated to the pace of being the starter and with the skill talent he’s got around him. Expect the Marcus attack to not be stuck in the mud. Prosper is the most confounding team in the state of Texas. This is a team that owns a win over Euless Trinity and has played Guyer and Allen as close as anyone, but they are also capable of some subpar outings as evidenced by a loss to Braswell and close wins over Little Elm and McKinney Boyd. This is a fascinating matchup because both teams are good enough to win the region, but both have questions and at least in Prosper’s case they’ve show inconsistent play. Marcus without their QB is a huge loss and with Prosper’s playoff experience from a year ago, expect the Eagles to physically wear Marcus down in the second half. Stepp’s Pick: Prosper by 3

Cypress Bridgeland (10-0) vs Klein Collins (4-4), 7 p.m. Thursday at Cypress’ Cy-Fair FCU Stadium: Unbeaten Bridgeland will look to get their first playoff win in school history this week, but the opening matchup won’t be easy as Klein Collins is a much better team than their 4-4 record indicates. Bridgeland had last week off, fresh off defeating Cy-Fair in their season finale, 41-29. WR Dylan Goffney, a SMU commit, is back to full speed after battling injuries early in the year and he torched Cy-Fair in the win with nine receptions for 181 yards and two touchdowns. QB Conner Weigman is one of the state’s top signal callers in the junior class and he executes the Bears up-tempo offense to perfection. Klein Collins is a tough and physical team that relies on a big offensive line and potent running game. The Tigers are more the capable of pulling the upset as they’ve played North Shore within a touchdown and unbeaten Tomball Memorial within a point. The key with Collins will be their offense; keeping the Bridgeland offense off the field will be priority No. 1 and if Collins can control the tempo with their running game and limit the Bears touches on offense. That keeps this one interesting for three quarters, but Bridgeland and that fast-paced attack gets it going late and the Bears get that playoff win. Stepp’s Pick: Cypress Bridgeland by 7

Abilene Cooper (7-1) vs. Mansfield Summit (4-4), 7 p.m. Friday at Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium: This is clearly one of the trickier 1 vs. 4 matchups in bi-district this week as Abilene Cooper welcomes a supremely talented Mansfield Summit squad to town. Mansfield Summit was able to sneak into the playoffs on a strange district tiebreaker rule and the Jaguars are looking to capitalize on the second life. Last week they knocked off Birdville, 38-24, as Summit’s special teams keyed things early. Jalon Rock returned the game’s opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, then Summit forced a punt on Birdville’s opening drive, and Sean Smith returned the punt 85 yards for a touchdown giving SHS a 14-0 lead before running an offensive play. Auburn WR commit Hal Presley hauled in a pair of touchdown passes as well for the Jags. Abilene Cooper rolled through district play unbeaten and didn’t score less than 48 points in a game this season. RB Noah Garcia, QB Aidan Thompson and WR Bryan Spotwood are a big-time trio operating behind an offensive line that’s playing their best football of the season. Summit’s talented enough to make some plays on a shaky Cooper defense, but combine the long road trip into a hostile environment and the explosive Abilene Cooper attack and it could be a long night for the Jags. Stepp’s Pick: Abilene Cooper by 16

Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (9-0) vs. McAllen Rowe (5-3), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Corpus Christi’s Buccaneer Stadium: 15-5A Division I champion Veterans Memorial gets a tricky bi-district game against a solid McAllen Rowe squad that before this year as a playoff contender in Class 6A. The Eagles ended the regular season in style last week blowing past Corpus Christi Ray, 62-0, Nana Amo-Mensah returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and Vets never looked back. QB Carter Senterfitt threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown before leaving the game late in the first quarter as the Vets backups took over from that point. McAllen Rowe was able to get six games played on the field this year, along with a pair of forfeit wins and the Warriors have a dangerous pro-style offensive attack. However, this is Rowe’s first real road trip of the season and they are going into a challenging environment against a playoff and battle tested Vets bunch. Stepp’s Pick: Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial by 22

North Forney (8-1) vs. Denison (7-3), 7 p.m. Friday at Forney’s City Bank Stadium: If you like points this one might be the game for you as both North Forney and Denison are capable of putting up big time offensive numbers. North Forney bounced back nicely from their loss to Ennis before Thanksgiving with a 43-14 win over Royse City. Nevada commit RB Ty Collins ran for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while Michigan State commit TE caught a touchdown pass from QB Jacob Acuna; Acuna also ran for two scores to lead the Falcons. Denison’s offense has been sizzling since their loss to Frisco, scoring over 50 points in three straight games, including last week’s 55-0 win over Princeton. Several of Denison’s key playmakers got in on the act as RB Asa Osbourn ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns, QB Caleb Heavner tossed two touchdown passes, 80 yards with touchdown passes to Trey Rhodes and Ty Kirkbride, RB Jadarian Price ran for 58 yards and two touchdowns and Keleon Vaughn returned a punt 54 yards for a touchdown. It was the ‘Jackets first shutout win since 2017 and Coach Rogers believes his team is peaking at the right time, but going on the road against a top ten type team in North Forney is a tough bi-district draw. Stepp’s Pick: North Forney by 12

Texarkana Texas High (10-0) vs. Montgomery Lake Creek (6-4), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Texarkana’s Tiger Stadium: Unbeaten Texas High, by virtue of their district title and remote location, is forcing Lake Creek to take quite the road trip in the first ever playoff appearance as they are facing a 280-mile road trip from the Houston area to Northeast Texas. Texas High has dominated all year behind a defense that’s led by Oklahoma commit LB Clayton Smith. The Tigers have allowed just over 13 points per game this season. Last week the Tigers quickly ended any hopes of a Whitehouse upset with a 51-21 win as THS raced out to a 48-0 halftime lead before sitting their starters in the second half. QB Brayson McHenry was the star for the Tigers throwing for 306 yards and five touchdowns in the first half. Lake Creek has stumbled the last two weeks after their 6-2 start dropping back to back games to Huntsville and Montgomery in lopsided fashion, that doesn’t bode well for the Lions chances in this one. Stepp’s Pick: Texarkana Texas by 19
