SMU backup QB Terrance Gipson enters transfer portal

SMU football's primary backup quarterback Terrance Gipson will transfer after just 1.5 years with the Mustangs. The Houston Westfield product served as primary backup.

SMU quarterback Terrance Gipson has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports. Gipson serves as primary backup to Shane Buechele.

The redshirt freshman Gipson appeared in six games as a Mustang, completing all six of his passes for 86 yards and rushing for 56 yards and one touchdown.

"Terrance and I talked about it and my concern was more about him finding the right place for him," SMU coach Sonny Dykes said according to 247Sports. "I hope he can go some place where he's comfortable, can excel and get a degree."

With Gipson gone, the quarterback depth at SMU becomes tenuous. Former walk-on Derek Green will now serve as backup quarterback. Green has only thrown three career passes, one of which was intercepted. SMU could also consider converting William Brown back from receiver to quarterback.

Gipson was a three-star recruit from Houston Westfield coming out of high school. He threw for more than 2,000 yards and rushed for nearly 500 yards with 26 touchdowns in his junior season before suffering a season-ending injury as a senior. Gipson had offers from Nebraska, Virginia and Memphis out of high school.
