The Battle for the Iron Skillet is back for its 100th iteration.
Weeks after cancelling the nonconference game for COVID-19-related reasons, the Mustangs and Horned Frogs have rescheduled. The game will now take place on Sept. 12 at Amon Carter Stadium in Fort Worth.
The game was originally scheduled on Sept. 26 in Dallas. However, the Big 12 mandated that nonconference games must take place at home Big 12 stadiums in 2020. To make room for the Horned Frogs, SMU’s game against Stephen F. Austin was moved to Sept. 26.
The Horned Frogs originally scheduled Tennessee Tech as their lone nonconference game, but the Golden Eagles cancelled after the Ohio Valley Conference postponed fall football. That opened the door for a renewed battle for the Metroplex.
The newly-scheduled game immediately becomes one of the most difficult nonconference games in the Big 12 this season. Three of the scheduled games are against FCS opponents, The only matchup that comes close is Iowa State's battle with Louisiana-Lafayette.
SMU’s 41-38 win over TCU in Fort Worth was the defining moment of a breakout season for the 2019 Mustangs. SMU went on to win 10 games for the first time since 1983 and earn the cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
Before that matchup, TCU had won 11 of the previous 12 meetings between these two programs. Gary Patterson has only lost three times in 19 tries against SMU.
With the announcement, Baylor is the only Big 12 program yet to announce its nonconference matchup.
