In a move that could portend more changes to the 2020 Texas high school football calendar, TAPPS — Texas’ largest private school league — announced on Friday that their football season would be delayed by five weeks and truncated.
The league’s football season was scheduled to begin on August 3 with strength and conditioning drills, with the first games scheduled for August 27. But in a meeting held virtually on Friday morning, TAPPS executive director Bryan Bunselmeyer said the schedule would be pushed back more than a month.
Now, strength and conditioning drills can begin September 8, followed by two weeks of practices in full pads and a scrimmage period starting September 21, leading up to the first week of games on September 28. The league will not move back their state championship games for now, opting instead for a truncated season, but Bunselmeyer said that the situation remains fluid.
The move comes in the midst of weeks of escalation in the COVID-19 pandemic across the state of Texas, and growing discussion about the opening of schools.
The UIL, the public school governing body in the state of Texas, has not announced any changes to the schedule as of yet, but there is increasing speculation that an announcement — perhaps similar to that of TAPPS — is imminent.
TAPPS is the state’s largest private school league, with more than 135 teams that play Texas high school football.
