Texas Tech Adds Pair of Impressive TE Commits in Klein's Mason Tharp and WF Rider's Jed Castles

A closer look at Texas Tech's two new tight end pledges — Klein's Mason Tharp and Wichita Falls Rider's Jed Castles.

One of the first things that Matt Wells established upon his arrival at Texas Tech was the importance of the tight end in his offense.

They signed junior college transfer Travis Koontz and Magnolia TE Simon Gonzalez in 2019 and followed that up in 2020 with the signing of Wellington's John Holcomb.

The TXHSFB Class of 2021 is deep with tight end quality, and the Red Raiders took advantage by adding two more impressive tight ends: Klein's Mason Tharp (6'8, 230) and Wichita Falls Rider's Jed Castles (6'7, 215)

This duo of tight end commits possess skill sets that complement one another and the talent already assembled on the Tech roster.

Mason Tharp Scouting Report: Tharp is a massive pass-catching weapon who scored 12 touchdowns in 2019 and also has some experience lining up as an in-line tight end. He uses his reach and long arms to his advantage as a pass catcher and as a blocker. Despite being tall, he can play with leverage and shows that he is a willing and able blocker. Because he is so long, it is easy to overlook that he is already weighing more than 230 pounds, which should allow him to get to 245-250 reasonably quickly in college.

Jed Castles Scouting Report: Castles is more of a receiver right now, as he splits out wide at Rider and uses his size to create huge disadvantages against high school defenders. At 6'7 with decent athleticism and long arms, he is going to be an option to turn to in the red-zone. Castles will need to bulk up considerably to play with his hand in the dirt and combat the enormous defensive ends in today's college game but has the length and frame to add some more weight.
