For 30 minutes of action in the 2013 2A-Division I state championship game, it appeared Shiner was going to roll to a state title and spoil Stamford’s third straight state title appearance.
The Comanches' rushing attack was hitting on all cylinders with Marcus Coleman and QB Jacob Stafford accounting for nearly 300 yards rushing as Shiner led 28-7 after Dadrian Taylor’s 22-yard touchdown run.
Stamford, playing their third game in 11 days due to an ice storm that pushed its regional final game from Friday to Monday, appeared to have nothing left in the tank. But the defending state champions showed incredible resolve down the stretch and immediately responded by marching 62 yards in less than a minute to get a 1-yard touchdown run from Bo Wimberley to cut Shiner's lead to 28-14.
After an exchange of punts and a turnover on downs, Stamford cut the lead to just one score early in the fourth when Wimberley ripped off a 53-yard touchdown run to make it 28-21.
With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Shiner tried to take the air out of the ball and drained nearly seven minutes off the clock, but the Comanches only moved 30 yards before turning the ball over on downs.
The Bulldogs needed just one play to tie the game up when Wimberley hooked up with James Washington for a 60-yard touchdown (Washington’s second of the day) and the game was suddenly tied at 28 with 3:42 left in the game.
Shiner’s collapse continued on its first play of the next series when the Comanches fumbled and Stamford again made them pay when Wimberley scored on a 12-yard run five plays later to give Stamford a 34-28 lead with 1:55 remaining.
Shiner's run-oriented team was not accustomed to the two-minute drill and Washington would stop any hopes of a rally with a 77-yard interception returned for a TD to cement Stamford's second straight title in an incredible 41-28 comeback victory.
