Texas football: Longhorns to wear helmet decal in honor of Cedric Benson

Benson, one of the best running backs in state history, was tragically killed on Aug. 17 in a motorcycle accident in Austin.

Texas football will wear a helmet decal in memory of former running back Cedric Benson, according to the Statesman's Brian Davis.

The football team released pictures of the helmets with the graphic, which features a "32" inside of a black circle on the back of the helmet. Benson wore 32 throughout his career.

Benson was one of the most prolific running backs in Texas history during his four-year career with the Longhorns. He rushed for 5,540 yards, which ranked No. 6 in NCAA history and behind only Ricky Williams in Texas history. He went on to play eight seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Bears and Bengals.

Before Texas, Benson was a dynamic running back at Midland Lee. He rushed for 8,423 yards and led the Rebels to three consecutive state championships. In 2000, Benson became the first high school player ever to grace the cover of Dave Campbell's Texas Football. He is still the only high schooler with a solo cover.

Benson and a passenger were tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in Austin on Aug. 17. He was 36.

Texas football will wear the decals for the first time on Saturday night, as the Longhorns face off against Louisiana Tech in the season opener.
