This Week in TXHSFB: Georgetown hires, a big retirement in East Texas, spring football Is near

DCTF's Texas high fchool football insider takes a look at the week that was in TXHSFB!

Chuck Griffin returns to Georgetown
Georgetown named Abilene ISD assistant athletic director Chuck Griffin as its next HFC. Griffin has two seasons of head coaching experience at Troup from 2010-2011 and spent 2012-207 as the offensive coordinator at Georgetown. He worked for current GISD athletic director Jason Dean and has his former boss, Phil Blue, in Abilene was Dean’s athletic director in Georgeown, so lots of ties here with this hire.

Crosby begins interviews
On Wednesday, Crosby started up the interview process to replace Jeff Riordan, who departed in March to take over at Tyler Chapel Hill. Reports are six candidates are being interviewed, including a current East Texas HC and two current assistant coaches in the Houston area, one of whom has head coaching experience. We are still trying to confirm who the other three candidates are at this time.

Issues in the Third Ward
Houston Yates for years was a beacon program and set the standard for quality football in the inner-city under legendary head coach Luther Booker. Included in that legend is the 1985 state champion squad that many to this day still consider the best TXHSFB team ever. Those days however are long gone as the Lions in 2018 hit rock bottom, forfeiting multiple games and finishing the season winless. Head coach Mike Watkins was officially let go shortly after the end of the season and Yates alum and former Fort Bend Hightower head coach Padriac McGinnis was hired on March 8. However, three weeks later we learned McGinnis and Yates had parted ways and as we head into April the Lions are back looking for a head coach.

Steve Wells retires at Liberty-Eyalu
Texarkana Liberty-Eylau head coach Steve Wells announced to his team and staff on Monday that he was retiring from education. Wells spent five seasons at Liberty-Eyalu posting a 36-28 record, with his best mark coming in 2015 when the Leopards went 12-2. Wells spent 16 seasons as a head coach with a 93-90 overall record with stops at Hooks, Mineola, Jacksonville and Liberty-Eylau. Despite the rise of Texarkana Pleasant Grove across town, Liberty-Eylau is still a highly sought after job and will get plenty of interest statewide.

Cody Fagan heads to Whitesboro
On Friday, Whitesboro ISD made it official naming Mildred head coach Cody Fagan as its next head football coach/athletic director. Fagan spent two seasons leading Mildred posting a 9-10 overall record. Prior to being named at Mildred, Fagan was an assistant at Mildothian, Red Oak and at Ada, Oklahoma. He replaces the most successful coach in school history at Whitesboro in Eddie Gill, whose contract was not renewed in early March.

Daniel Brittain resigns at Farwell
In a surprise move, Daniel Brittain resigned his post at Farwell on Thursday after five successful seasons leading the Steers. Brittain posted an impressive 41-17 record in five seasons, including a 10-2 mark in 2018.

With Spring Break in the rearview mirror it’s time to start looking ahead to Spring Football across the state!! Class 5A and Class 6A schools have the option to participate in spring practice and if they elect to do so they start fall camp a week later than 4A and below programs and 5A/6A schools that elected to not have spring ball. Schools that also choose to have spring ball also only have one preseason scrimmage instead of two.
