Report: Texas Tech fires head coach Kliff Kingsbury after six seasons

The Red Raiders will begin a national coaching search to replace Kingsbury.

Texas Tech has fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury, according to a report from The Athletic's Bruce Feldman. Kingsbury finishes with a 35-40 record in Lubbock after six seasons.

Kingsbury coached his final game on Saturday in the Texas Farm Bureau Texas Insurance Shootout against Baylor. The Red Raiders lost 35-24 against the Bears to finish 5-7 and miss a bowl game for the third time in six seasons.

There was excitement around the program when Texas Tech hired Kingsbury, then the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M, to lead the program in 2013. The Red Raiders won their first seven games under Kingsbury’s tutelage, and progressed to No. 10 in the AP poll.

The former record-setting Texas Tech quarterback, Kingsbury, built his reputation on outstanding offenses in Lubbock. Several NFL quarterbacks came through Texas Tech’s program under Kingsbury, including Patrick Mahomes and Davis Webb. Future Heisman winner Baker Mayfield also started his career under Kingsbury. Texas Tech generated some of the most productive offenses in college football over the past six seasons.

However, that didn’t translate to consistent success on the field. Following the 7-0 start, the Red Raiders won just 41 percent of their games under Kingsbury.

Texas Tech dealt with major injuries in Kingsbury’s final season after starting 5-2. All three scholarship quarterbacks went down for extended periods of time. However, athletic director Kirby Hocutt implied that there’s still no excuse for the inconsistency Kingsbury has shown over his tenure.
