On Tuesday, Odessa Permian ATH Peyton Powell (6'1, 170) announced his verbal commitment to play his college football for the Texas Longhorns.
Powell picked the 'Horns over offers from schools like Ohio State, Oklahoma, and TCU.
Powell, who plays quarterback for the Panthers, could play wide receiver or safety in college. Next Level Athlete, which evaluates and rates over 1,000 TXHSFB prospects in each cycle, rates him as one of the top athletes in the state in the Class of 2019.
Next Level Athlete on Powell:
Powell initially broke onto the scene after dominating the private school level as a QB. Now he is playing for one of the most storied HSFB programs in the state, and he has been equally impressive.
His height and weight were verified at the Next Level Athlete Showcase in March, but he is a long-framed prospect who plays bigger than his listed height/weight.
Powell has special elusiveness that has put him in an elite talent category. His sudden lateral quickness has improved and given him an added dimension in the open field. Sudden acceleration to full speed is evident as he runs away from defenders.
Powell's gait is effortless, and he is quick on cuts and long on extension breakouts. Not much tape on what happens to Peyton on square contact by hard contact defenders.
Competed as a quarterback at the Showcase event, but a skill position will fit him best on the next level. Could also play safety, but we have seen him mostly on offense throughout his development as a prospect. He is peaking at the right time.
