TCU quarterback Michael Collins was named the starting quarterback by TCU coach Gary Patterson on Monday morning. Former starter Shawn Robinson will undergo shoulder surgery that will likely keep him out for the rest of the season.
"We have no choice," TCU coach Gary Patterson said on the media teleconference. "Shawn has been trying to play through it and will have surgery and Michael Collins will be our starter."
Collins entered the 52-27 loss to Oklahoma in relief of Robinson in the second quarter. He immediately led a 17-0 run to get the Horned Frogs back in the ball game. However, Collins skinned his hand and struggled in the second half of the loss. He finished completing 7-of-17 passes for 142 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
"We sparked in the second quarter but we only scored three points in the second," Patterson said. We did move the football and did some things. He hurt his hand but that's all better. Most importantly, he scored some points and got us back in the ball game. We'll see what he can do this week against Kansas."
The redshirt sophomore Collins transferred to TCU after playing one season at Penn. He was in line for a three-year starting job with the Quakers, but chose instead to walk on at TCU. Patterson awarded Collins a scholarship in the spring.
Collins led New Canaan High School (Conn.) to three state championships. He threw for 54 touchdowns as a senior, which set the all-time Connecticut state record. Collins was a high school teammate of TCU offensive tackle Lucas Niang.
