Today’s spotlight: Class 2A Division II Region IV

There weren’t a ton of changes in Region IV in this alignment, with the notable exception of Bremond (who won three straight titles from 2014-2016) coming back to Region IV after a two-year stint in Region III. The Tigers were placed in District 13-2A Division II with Chilton (who will be under a new head coach), Granger, Iola and Bartlett. 14-2A Division II is headlined by last year’s regional champion Burton who looks to be one of the favorites once again in Region IV but keep an eye on Flatonia as it could be a real player in the regional race as well. Falls City will get most of the attention in 15-2A Division II and rightfully so, but LaPryor and D’Hanis have been known to field strong teams and will be no pushover for the Beavers. 16-2A Division II is far South Texas district featuring teams from the Coastal Bend and then LaVilla out of the Valley and Bruni from the Laredo area. Noteable in 16-2A Division II is the addition of Premont who is reviving its football program after six years.

Burton

The Panthers rolled to an impressive 13-2 mark a year ago behind one of the state’s most explosive offensive attacks. The Panthers return 15 starters from last year, most notably TCU commit De’Monderick Winters who accounted for 2,327 total yards and 39 touchdowns a year ago. He can play RB, WR, CB, S, LB and just for fun he can return kicks as well! Four-year starter at QB Caleb Hamel is back after “only” accounting for 73 touchdowns and 4,739 yards of total offense. There’s no doubt Burton has the firepower to put point up on just about any team it faces. A trip to the state title game will happen only if the defense can improve, because it’s now or never for Coach Hodde’s squad.

Falls City

The Beavers finished up 2017 at 11-3 and Coach Britt Hart returns 13 total starters including seven on the defensive side of the ball. The offense will be led by four-year starter QB Keyshawn Johnson who returns after a junior season of 3,049 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns. As he goes so goes the Falls City offensive attack. Although Falls City runs a version of the Wing-T, it will put the ball in the air with the return of top target Corey Dziuk (721 receiving, 10 touchdowns). LB Kevin Jendrusch (147 tackles, 6 sacks) is back after a tremendous sophomore season and will anchor the defense along with LB Derrick Gonzalez (131 tackles, five sacks, two interceptions). The key for a run in 2018 from the Beavers will be how their young offensive line matures.

Bremond

The Tigers didn’t lose a game for three seasons between 2014 and 2016, so for them a 10-2 season last year is a bit of a disappointment. 20 total letterman are back for the Tigers but HC Jeff Kasowski knows the leadership lost with those 15 seniors who moved on will be tough to replace. Look for junior QB J.T. Anthony to take over the Bremond offense and also patrol the secondary He’ll be the dynamic playmaker BHS seemed to lack at times on offense last year. RB/LB Dalton Wilganowski ran for 711 yards and eight touchdowns a year ago and will also be a factor on defense. DB RyKenderia Paul anchors the secondary. He picked off five passes a year ago. There are some questions in the trenches for sure as the depth and size that’s been such a factor for Bremond during their title runs isn’t quite there at the moment.

Flatonia

The Bulldogs bring back one of the state’s most veteran squads as 10 starters return on both sides of the ball from a squad that advanced to the third round of the playoffs a year ago. Two-way playmakers Juan Netro and DaKory Willis will lead the way along with veterans in the trenches Cameron Bekcer, William Ackerman and Dustin Luck. Keep an eye on sophomore RB Chris Johnston who Coach Chris Freytag says is the fastest kid in the program. He could emerge as a real homerun threat for the Bulldogs attack. “We played lots of young kids last year and we think that experience is going to pay off,” said Coach Freytag.
