Cy-Fair ISD on Friday named Galena Park North Shore offensive line coach Deveon McKinney as the next head football coach at Cypress Creek High, replacing Greg McCaig, who announced his retirement in mid-March.

McKinney, who is native of Sherman, played his college football at Texas A&M-Commerce before beginning his coaching career at Corsicana where he spent five seasons on staff.  From there, McKinney made his way to the Houston area where he’s had stints as an assistant at Baytown Sterling, Katy Mayde Creek and Cypress Ranch, before going to Waller where he was the associate head coach/co-offensive coordinator.

McKinney said familiarity with Cy-Fair ISD played a big part in his attraction to the job when it opened.

“I’m familiar with Cy-Fair ISD and since I came to Houston I have considered Cy-Fair ISD home, so when Coach McCaig announced his retirement I was really intrigued," McKinney said. "Cy Creek has great community support and there’s always a lot of talent. I’m looking forward to connect the old with the new, it’s really a great opportunity and I can’t wait to get going."

Coach McKinney has spent the last two seasons on staff at North Shore where’s he been part of a staff that’s played for back-to-back state championships, falling just short to Duncanville.
