The State College of Mines and Metallurgy hit the football field for the first time in 1914 under head coach Tommy Dwyer. The school changed its name to Texas Western in 1949, and the following year, Brumbelow became head coach and went on to become the program's most successful head coach with a .651 winning percentage over seven seasons.
